DragonFly - Jakarta

Ismaya Group is always up to having the world's best house DJs, and in mid-December 2009, for the second time Dragonfly had one of the Swedish House Mafia, Steve Angello, without his partner Sebastian Ingrosso this time.

Steve Angello being one of the most prominent hitmakers with Sweet Dreams, You've Got To Show Me Love, Leave The World Behind and many more, the night was much anticipated by jetset clubbers, Dragonfly's faithful, plus the fact that the date marked the beginning of a long weekend.

At around 10:30 PM, Dragonfly already saw a lot of Swedish and Greeks living in Jakarta on its bars and sofas. European nationalism came to see their fellow countryman, Steve being half Greek, half Swedish, and most certainly a national pride.

The petals were luminously light green this time, to match the green Christmas tree at one side of the hall. We went around before finally deciding to sit near the sunken jacuzzi, just in front of the DJ booth.

Dragonfly always being punctual with their event timing, Steve Angello came just about a quarter past midnight and started his set half an hour later. The DJ seemed relaxed despite having just landed a couple of hours previously.

What we like from Dragonfly is that the lights are dim enough but not too much - the golden lighting mode seems to pour glam and glitters to the clubbing crowd inside.

Steve Angello was, even if very mainstream, an idealist. His set was full of long preambules to his hit tracks, sans doute to incite the crowd for more. During Steve's two-hour set, there might not be as many songs played as there had been on Laidback Luke's set, for example. But the prologues were longer and the tracks were played to the end, not jumping on and off in short bites like Luke's.

All the hit songs were out - Leave The World Behind, You've Got To Show Me Love, Sweet Dreams, Let It Go, plus some classic house tracks such as Modjo's Lady. Steve was energetic enough and apparently enjoying the session very much - Dragonfly Jakarta's crowd being one of the most educated ones in Jakarta, their level of appreciation to good house music is so high that they're always very responsive. The same applied to Steve Angello's music.

During two full hours, Dragonfly clubbers were delightfully spoiled by the captivating sounds of the Swedish House Mafia, and it was with a big applause that Steve Angello finally announced the end of his set.

Closing the Dragonfly international series in 2009, Steve Angello will most certainly enter the tough competition for Jakarta's best events this year.
